STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Like the 113 other eateries self-certified at the moment for sidewalk or roadside dining on Staten Island, Jimmy Max now offers eats on the street. That’s somewhat literal: the 30-year old Westerleigh restaurant features seven tables and chairs about eight feet from Watchogue Road.
People are slow to embrace the presentation, he admits. The June sun has been roast-y there in front of the store and these days “oppressively hot, oppressively humid.” But they’ve been killing it with to go orders.
“We’ve been very fortunate. The takeout and delivery portion of our business has been quite brisk,” said McBratney. They muddled through several holidays thanks to meal packages. A family of four or six could be fed generously for $100 to $150, depending on the options.
